Did you know that each week, Rock City serves the City of Columbus through various outreach opportunities? Beyond our large events (like Christmas Give and Laundry Love), our desire is to make an ongoing impact.
Maybe you volunteered at our Christmas Give in 2013 and left with a desire to do more. Here are several opportunities for you to jump in and make a difference on a regular basis:
Rock City Homeless Ministries
Twice a month, this team gathers together to minister to the needs of the homeless in our community. Providing meals, supplies and bible studies, this group is focused on sharing God’s love to the forgotten. You can email email@example.com.
Super Saturdays in Weinland Park
Each Saturday, we partner with The Garden Church in the Weinland Park community to provide children in the community a nutritious meal, enrichment and spiritual development. If you love working with children, this is a perfect fit for you! You can email firstname.lastname@example.org to get involved!
Reading Buddies at Eakin Elementary
Rock City is excited to offer this new opportunity with our friends at Eakin Elementary. Be paired with children who are struggling readers in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade to help them grow in their literacy. If you are interested in becoming a Reading Buddy at Eakin email email@example.com.
International Friendships at Ohio State
Each year, thousands of international students come to Columbus for an education. We have an opportunity, through our work with International Friendships, to show God’s love to these students through airport pickups, temporary housing, English conversation and holiday hosting. If you are interested in getting involved with IFI, you can email Brenda Cooper at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Beyond what we’ve shared above, you can look forward to our summer Beyond Our Walls Events – Laundry Love and Backpack Give. We’ll be sharing more about those in the coming months! Thanks for going Beyond Our Walls with us!
On Sunday, we announced Rock City’s latest One for One initiative! In 2014, a portion of Rock City’s One for One funds will go toward fully equipping and staffing a medical clinic at the Child Development Center we funded in San Salvador, El Salvador in 2013. In Mid-February, the clinic will open its doors to the 120 children at the center as well as the entire community.
In addition to medical supplies, vaccines and medicine, Rock City will be supplying a full-time Doctor and Medical Assistant for the clinic … providing medical care to a community that has previously not had access.
To ensure quality of care, we have teamed up with Total Health who has set up several medical clinics throughout Central America.
We are particularly excited about the opportunity this clinic presents for the many doctors, dentists and nurses at Rock City. While on our team trips, they will have the opportunity to use their expertise to bring care to many who are in need. You can learn more about our team trips planned for 2014 HERE.
Thanks so much to the people of Rock City for your faithfulness and generosity. As our church grows, our ability to make an impact grows. And this is just the beginning!
A huge thanks to each and every volunteer who gave their time to make this year’s Christmas Give spectacular! Through the generosity of the people of Rock City, we were able to bless over 800 children with brand new shoes and many families with financial assistance.
We bet you can’t watch this recap video without smiling! Go on … we dare you to try!
For 2013 we are joining together once again to show the love of Christ and this year, the Christmas Give is getting a whole lot bigger! We’ve upped our goal from 450 to 800 pair of brand new shoes!
Here’s the plan:
-We’re heading to Eakin Elementary on Thursday, December 12 to throw a huge party for the kids at the school, their families and teachers! We’ll be munching on cookies, hot chocolate, crafting and we’ve heard that Frosty is going to make an appearance! We’ll also have the privilege of putting brand new shoes on the sweet little feet of our Eakin friends.
-We’re heading back to Weinland Park Elementary on Saturday, December 14 for one of our favorite days of the year! We’ll be flipping pancakes, singing, crafting and of course letting Santa know what’s on our list! And our favorite thing … fitting each student their with brand new shoes. It will be a blast!
-We’re making a stop at the Homeless Families Foundation on Monday, December 16 for a fun afternoon of yummy cookies fun crafts, dancing and much more! We’re bringing with us a ton of warm winter boots for the homeless children in their after school program and 100 brand new warm winter coats for the parents in the program!
-We’re going global to our friends in San Salvador and providing each child in the Child Development Center in San Salvador a brand new pair of shoes. The Rock City team that travels there in March of 2014 will be presenting the shoes. It will be awesome!
-AND, we’re supporting families in need this Christmas to show them the love of Christ. This might mean making sure the heat is working as families prepare for a cold winter or helping a single mom put gifts under the tree this Christmas. With your help we hope to be able to meet many needs this Christmas season.
You can partner with us in two ways:
Please join us in praying for those who will be impacted by the Christmas Give this year. May they experience God’s love.
Last week, the central islands in the Philippines were devastated by Typhoon Haiyan. Below is a letter from our Lead Pastor, Chad Fisher, to the people of Rock City in response to this disaster. Please join us this weekend and next at Rock City to help make a difference.
Dear Rock City Family,
Last week, the central islands in the Phillipines were devastated by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms in recorded history anywhere in the world. Over 700,000 people are reported homeless and an estimated 10,000 have died. The number of people who are hurting and in need of hope is staggering.
As a church, our desire in the face of this type of tragedy is always to respond wisely and generously and to do what we can to deliver hope. Our leadership team has decided that, as a start, now through the end of November, we will double One for One each week and send financial aid directly to our partner Samaritan’s Purse who already has feet on the ground in many parts of the Philippines.
Earlier this month, we made a One for One commitment to the Columbus Homeless Families Foundation to provide warm winter coats to the children their organization serves. We were able to fully meet their need in just 2 weeks, which means we’ll be able to give nearly $6000 through One for One to Samaritan’s Purse in the Philippines.
I’m asking that you join with me in praying for our brothers and sisters in the Philippines and that you make every effort possible to join us in this effort. For every person, each week, who walks through our doors, at both our Regal and Lennox locations, we’ll be able to give, not one, but two dollars to help meet this great need.
I am so thankful for the heart of this church that responds quickly and decisively when faced with the opportunity to make a difference. As we grow, our ability to make an impact grows.
Truly, we cannot out-give God! He is supplying our needs and He is using us to meet the needs of the hurting, and to make a difference in the lives of those around us.
And this is only the beginning…
